It seems that if your first socom was S1 then your take is S1 was the best. If S3 was your first...then your take is that S3 was great and that was your favorite. If that is the case...then why is that?
I think it is because of the phenomena of the Socom High. Once you get the Socom High your addicted. Staying up all night playing because your on a win streak. Thinking about tactics and how to improve yours because some trash talking clan scraped you and you want redemption. But when the time comes to move on to the next game in the series, no matter the quality of the game, you just don't get as High on Socom as you did before. And when you notice that Socom High isn't what it once was it leaves you with the gut feeling that the next game in the series just isn't on the same level as the previous title. And you are left searching why that is...and you cling to what makes sense and that is the changes in the game play.
Confrontation is my favorite socom. Though it is not my first socom...It is my first socom online. And online socom seems to be the true socom experience for me atleast.
What was your first socom? Is that your first Socom?....and please explain your answer.

SOCOM 1 was by far my favorite.
Reasons, simple. First time I ever played and spoke with someone over a headset.
Back then Media wasn't huge so I didn't judge every little detail of the game.
Hit Detection was the best, never heard complaints about snipers or assault rifles.
SOCOM 1 to me was perfect, community and no cry babies.

thanks HTK
you know how you said you didn't judge every little detail. It is the same for me with Confrontation.

Even though SOCOM 1 was my first, I enjoyed 2 a lot more mainly due to the new maps and the clan layout.

See in SOCOM 1 not having clan support it actually unified the clans a lot more, for example it put a SPOTLIGHT on lobbys and where certain clans hang out. That will never exist like it did back then.

Socom 2 was my first taste of the Socom series.........
Although I was a TOTAL NOOB on that game, (some say I still am!) I was in total awe of Socom.
Combined Assault was the first Socom I really started to sink my teeth into after I understood how to play the game.
S2 taught me how to work as a team, how to use my weapons, and the idea of "routes" of a map. This is where "basic strats" slowly started to piece themselves together....
In CA, I was able to hone in on my personal skill level and get a taste of building a new clan from scratch. I will say, I honestly learned more about "clan tactics" on CA than I did S2.
But in a sense, CA/S3 was like that for all of us. The "big maps" was kinda new to everyone in the community so I felt I got a chance to "start off" where everyone else did.
Unlike S2, where the "8v8" theme had been perfected since S1 and a noob like myself just got obliterated.
When I look back, Socom 2 had me giggling like a schoolgirl. I was awful at it, but it still remains my favorite Socom in the series to this day.
There was just something about the online community on S2 that seemed to change on S3/CA.
I honestly think alot of people out there miss the "old community" more than any features or maps we lost with CA or Confrontation.

Socom 1 was my first Socom as well. What really sold it for me was, and why it stands out SOO much in my mind is the fact that if you got shot in the chest 3 times, your dead. If you got shot in the stomach, you dropped to one knee and lost mobility. You got shot in the arm? You aim goes all over the place. You got shot in the leg? you practically stopped dead in your tracks. The hit detection was the best of the series. Health Bar? Screw that.... you got a colored DOT. Then people realized you could use game genie on-line. Well that kind of screwed everything up. :-(

Socom 2 and Socom Combined Assault were my favorite. Socom 1, I really didn't get into Clans all that much. I think talking on the mic was the biggest thing to me also, that was revolutionary.

SOCOM 1 was my first SOCOM as well. I was 15-16 when it came out, and it took me by storm. I was all over it.
But SOCOM 2 is the one that is my favorite. Even though S1 had the best hit detection. (S2's hit detection was pretty bad. and I'm being generous.)
But 2, I loved the lobby layout, the MUSIC. I was really hoping to hear lobby music again that was as unique as S2 but nothing has come close so far. Also the music that would play during gameplay totally set the settings of every round. It really made you feel like you were out there, watching and taking part in battle.
The clan system made it much easier to find everyone. Tho I didn't have problems at all finding my clan in the first SOCOM. It's funny how it worked out as well as it does today.
But 2 made the maps look much prettier. (Blood Lake especially) and every single map on S2 was awesome in it's own way. When 3 came out, I was so dissapointed in how Different SOCOM 3 felt than the first 2. I can't exactly explain but it just didn't have that Feel. That feel is very important and it was missing. That's when the series started to lose it's touch. The one we all Crave for. And the maps on 3 were terrible.
Not one map in S3 IMO were as good as any of the favorites from the past 2. Not one compared. The only map I did have a blast playing in, in 3 was Killing Fields and Devils Road. After that, I had enough and stayed at 2. And I was back at home again.
There really isn't a game out there that I can call a "home" other than SOCOM >_> But I'm sure every passionate fan could say the same thing.

so far my theory sucks ass LOL In your defense, it applies to me! And BOOM, I think this was a GREAT question. The idea that the "first impression" of Socom being favorered vs. the GAMEPLAY you preferred is HUGE. Thanks for the great thread idea. It's been an interesting read.

The way I look at it, your first can't be your favorite. or at least IMO.
I feel as though unless you have played shooters before, you wouldn't really admire SOCOM for being a great game because the genre is new to you.

Socom I got me addicted.
Socom II held my addiction aside from horrible hit detection, laggy maps, inconsistent guns and RPG/GL's.
Socom 3 on lost any interest in the series. Did I buy them? Yes, but they were horrible.
One thing that a lot of people aren't touching on is the fact that most that played S1 or early S2 grew up when S3 came out. For example: college, real life, kids, etc. To me that had a huge affect on the "community" and as a result the fun factor.

I loved Socom 1. It was my first. But Socom 2 will always be my favorite because of all the stuff they added .
The Dead people grayed out on the scoreboard bumped the tactical response of the game up.
I loved the extra maps and weapons.
The hit detection really didn't bother me. I was one of the only guys who could get kills with the 552-SD.
They had a decent attempt at anti-cheating, But that only lasted like 6 months.
They had decent clan options and visible clan tags, so we didn't have to go out and create new names for clans.
The User Created Rooms got more robust. In Socom 1, you had the choice of 3 maps, and if you wanted to play any more than that, you had to choose random for one of your maps.
Respawn entered Socom 2 for the first time, which I thought really helped with the goofing around and warming up.
We got to save our load outs.
For the first time ever on a console, we got a form of DLC.
I think we got a join friends option, or at least we got to see where they were playing.
We got one of the best game modes ever in Breach. We also got Escort which was almost equally as fun.
Socom 2 was what a sequel should be. Taking all the good things about the first or previous games, and adding more good stuff to it. Socom 3 and CA kind of forgot to do that, and it seems that Socom 4 is following suite.
